This week we replaced an old water softener at a hotel in Bournemouth, and replaced it with a non-electric twin-tank (duplex) system.
This hotel was facing ongoing limescale damage to appliances after their old machine had stopped working. The old machine was a single cylinder, electric water softener. These machines can be convenient as they can be set to regenerate at 02:00 in the morning, without interruption to day to day service. The benefit of the replacement machine is in it's duplex design. One cylinder is able to regenerate whilst the other cylinder can still provide soft water to service. This means that regeneration is only required when exactly the right amount of water has been used, so is far more efficient to water usage and will adjust accordingly to demand for water. This can be particularly helpful for hotel customers who may see fluctuations in demand for water at different times of the day, or the year.

Southern Softflow assessed the site for existing plumbing and water demand and flow requirements. The machine selected is a Kinetico Mach2100 in a standard setting. Although valves were in place, they were looking a little tired so we fitted new bypass valves onto the existing pipework. The hardest part of the work was removal of the old machine. As a single cylinder machine, all of the capacity was contained in one very large cylinder. The plant room is in a basement, accessed by a narrow stairway, we had a couple of aches the next day!
Water softeners are often an essential item for hotels and other hospitality and catering venues in hard water areas. At a minimum, the effects of limescale can be unsightly on dishes and glassware, but most important is the protection of important assets of a premises. Down time on dishwashers or other kitchen equipment can seriously hamper service times, and the cost of repair and replacement of such assets can be a significant burden.
If you have or manage a commercial premises in Bournemouth or the surrounding areas of Dorset and The New Forest, we will happily consult on a solution for you.
RIP to the old electric water softener.
